1. My computer will not boot up after I installed the CD-RW drive. What is wrong?

Please check the installation of your CD-RW drive:

  1. Turn off and unplug your computer first. Check that each connector of the IDE cable is inserted securely and has the correct orientation. The correct connection has the coloured stripe on the IDE cable lined up with PIN 1 of each connector of the motherboard, CD-ROM drive, hard disk drive, etc.
  2. Check that the power cable is attached correctly to each drive.
  3. If an IDE cable is connected to the CD-Rewriter and to another device check the jumper settings of both devices. The jumper of the CD-RW drive is located at the rear of the drive, next to the IDE connector. Make sure that only one device that is connected to the IDE cable is set to Master (MA) and only one device is set to Slave (SL). If the CD-RW drive is the only device connected to the IDE cable then it must be set as the Master (MA).

2. The CD-Rewriter doesn't appear in My Computer or Explorer. How can I fix this?

If you cannot find CD-Rewriter in Explorer and no icon for the drive appears in under My Computer:

  1. Shut the computer down and check the installation of the drive (please refer to the answer for Question 1, above)
  2. Turn the computer on and check that the drive is detected during the PC's power-on self-test (POST). If it is not detected, check the jumper settings at the rear of the drive. If the CD-RW drive is the only device connected to the IDE cable then it must be set as the Master (MA).
  3. Is the CD-Rewriter receiving power properly? You can test it by pressing eject button to see if the tray opens and closes. Check the power connector if the tray fails to open.

Windows 95, 98, Me, XP or 2000

Check that both IDE ports are active. To do this, Click on Start, then Settings, Control Panel, Device Manager, IDE HDD Controller and Properties. Click on the Settings tab and Select "enable both IDE channels" then reboot your PC.

Windows NT 4.0

If you have a SCSI or other non-IDE hard disk drive, check the Devices section of the Control Panel and make sure that the Startup type of the atapi device is set to "Boot"

3. How can I check which drive letter was assigned to the CD Rewriter?

The CD Rewriter will have an icon, just like a CD-ROM drive. You can easily see which icon belongs to the CD Rewriter by double-clicking "My Computer" icon' then right-click CD drive's icon' and selecting Eject. The tray of selected drive will open.

4. Why is an error message shown when I double-click on the CD Rewriter icon?

An error can occur if:

  1. There is no CD in the CD-Rewriter, load a CD that is not blank and try again.
  2. The disc is damaged or dirty. Clean the CD using a soft cloth and check its surface for scratches or other damage.
  3. After loading a CD, you need to wait for a short time to let the CD-Rewriter register the disc's table of contents and other information and ready it for further access. An error will occur if you try to access the CD during this time. The CD-Rewriter is ready when the light stops flashing.
  4. The CD disc in the tray may be loaded upside-down' or a little off-centre. Try reloading the CD with its label side up.
  5. If the disc you just loaded is a blank CD, it will not be accessible by most programs including Windows Explorer. Check the disc using an authoring package such as Easy CD Creator or try it later after copying some information to the CD or formatting it for use with InCD or DirectCD.

5. I have a DD6432UE/ DD4432UE/ DD321040UE CD-RW drive running in Windows 98/ME - the drive is not showing up as an available recorder when I open Nero Burning ROM. I am able to use the CD-RW drive in Windows Explorer to read CDs. How do I get Nero to see the CD-RW drive?

Download the Nero ASPI drivers from the Nero website. The URL is as follows:

ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroASPIen.exe

Save the file to your hard disk, then double click the saved file and unzip the file to a folder. Three files will be unzipped one of these will be a readme.txt document. Follow the instructions in the readme document to move the other two files to specific locations. Once the two files have been moved, restart the computer. Once the computer has re-booted, open Nero Burning ROM, go to the Recorder menu and select Choose Recorder the DD6432UE/ DD4432UE should now be listed as available for use in Nero. Double-click the CD-RW drive to select it for use.

6. Can I upgrade the firmware of my CD-RW drive?
Firmware Upgrades are available for some models. Click here to go to the upgrade page.

7. What connector and jumper setting should I use when installing my rewriteable CD drive?
For best performance, connect the CD-RW drive to the motherboard's Secondary IDE port. If a CD-ROM drive is present it should also be connected to the secondary IDE port as the Master device (set the jumper to the MA position). The CD-RW drive should then be connected as the Slave with the jumper set to its default position, SL.

If the CD-RW drive is the only device connected to the secondary IDE port then the jumper must be changed to the Master (MA) position. Many PCs will fail to detect or correctly access a Slave device if there is no Master present.

8. I am running my CD-RW under Windows 2000/ XP. After installing Nero InCD, then restarting the computer, the CD-RW drive no longer functions, with Device Manager reporting an "Error code 31" for the drive.
This error is caused by an incorrect addition to the registry on your system. The solution to this issue can be found at the following web address:
